What about potassium permanganate for the water sterilization? One crystal for about a litre of water for drinking and can be used in stronger quantities for sterilizing.
Have you used it before on your travels?

Hi Phil, thanks for the comments. potassium permanganate works well for water sterilisation. But can you get hold of it anymore? I remember buying it from the local chemist and mixing it with glycerin (as shown by my chemistry teacher...). You can't even get Iodine to use for water sterilisation anymore. I would imagine potassium permanganate has gone down the same route...
